Exciting innovations hit the vaporizer market every year, bringing with them new features and unique styles to adjust each session to your liking. If you’re looking for an upgrade or for your first device, look no further than these leading portable vaporizer models of 2019. Each model has its own set of characteristics that make it unique, offering a high-quality experience packaged into a device the size and weight of a candy bar. Some focus on power and vapor production at the sacrifice of size, while others are for customers explicitly looking for an ultra-small, ultra-light design. Whatever you are looking for, one of these portable vaporizers is sure to meet your needs.

What are portable vaporizers?

Portable vaporizers pack many of the advantages of desktop vaporizers into a mobile, handheld unit. While they might be smaller than their desktop counterparts, they still offer considerable vapor production, top notch vapor quality, and temperature control to help you build your ideal session. Some only support the use of dry herb material, while others are compatible with both dry herbs and cannabis concentrates. Portable vaporizers are available in convection heating models, conduction heating models, and occasionally a combination of the two methods. Some connect to a companion mobile application for increased functionality, while others pack all their settings onto the device itself. Which you choose is largely a matter of personal preference, but this review will break down the basic capabilities of each device and give you a good overview to help you decide which is right for you.

1. DaVinci IQ

The DaVinci IQ is a compact portable vaporizer that stands at 3.5″ tall and 1.65″ wide, making it easily carried along with you. Its oven can hold up to 0.3 grams of ground dry herb material, though the device comes with an oven lid that reduces the oven capacity for shorter sessions and material conservation. It is a conduction vaporizer, meaning it heats your material directly through physical contact with the heating element. The body of the DaVinci IQ is made of a brushed aluminum, which houses a ceramic zirconia vapor path.

The device offers a temperature range of 250°F to 430°F, which can be set down to the precise degree with the use of the companion mobile application. Its battery takes about 3 hours to charge from dead and can be used for about 60 continuous minutes before requiring a recharge.
The DaVinci IQ is available in three different colors: stealth, gunmetal, and blue. It comes with a 10-year limited warranty and is currently priced at $274.99. Read our DaVinci IQ vs Pax 3 Comparison article to learn more about these devices.

2. Crafty

The Crafty by Storz and Bickel is a medium-sized portable vaporizer with a straw style mouthpiece. Standing at 4.3″ tall and 2.2″ wide, the Crafty weighs in at about 135 grams, placing it on the larger and heavier spectrum of portable vaporizers. The Crafty can be used with both dry herb material and concentrates, with an oven that can hold up to 0.2 grams. It uses convection heating for dry herbs, which heats the material indirectly using the flow of hot air. However, for concentrates, the Crafty employs conduction heating. A cooling unit under the mouthpiece lowers the vapor temperature before it’s inhaled.

One of the high points of the Crafty is its substantial temperature range of 104°F to 410°F, which can be set to the exact desired degree. It also connects to a mobile application via Bluetooth® connectivity. The Crafty’s battery takes about 2 hours to fully charge from dead and can be used for 45 minutes continuously before requiring a recharge.

The Crafty comes with a 2-year limited warranty, as well as accessories including a power adapter, spare seal rings, three oven screens, a drip pad, filling aid, herb mill, dosing capsule and cleaning brush. The device starter kit is currently priced at $279. Learn more about Pax 3 vs Crafty device comparison.

3. PAX 3

The PAX 3 is one of the leading portable vaporizers on the market. It supports the use of both dry herb material and cannabis concentrates. The device is one of the smallest out there, standing at just 4″ tall, 1″ wide, and weighing 93 grams, making it an ideal portable companion. It is a conduction vaporizer that heats the material directly, heating up to your selected temperature setting rapidly in an average of 22 seconds. It is made of anodized aluminum, which houses a vapor path made of surgical-grade stainless steel.

The PAX 3 offers a temperature range of 360°F to 420°F with four pre-set settings, with a fifth custom temperature setting option; however, temperature can be customized down to one-degree increments with the use of the PAX Mobile smartphone application. In addition to the 60 temperature settings, the PAX 3 offers five Dynamic Modes, which allow you to tailor your vape session precisely to your liking. These Dynamic Modes support increased efficiency, boost vapor production, preserve flavor, and tone down the lights and cooldown time for increased discretion. The PAX 3 comes equipped with lip sensing technology, allowing the device to automatically cool when not in use and heat back up when you raise the mouthpiece to take another draw.

The PAX 3 comes in four colors: black, rose gold, teal, and silver. The device comes with a 10-year limited warranty and currently retails at $199.99 for the device alone, or $249.99 for the complete kit, which includes cleaning and maintenance tools, concentrate inserts, charging cable, the standard and half-pack oven lids, and both the flat and raised mouthpieces. 4. PAX 2

Like the PAX 3, the PAX 2 is an incredibly compact portable vaporizer that’s a favorite for vapers who wants flexibility. It is designed to vaporize dry herb material using conduction heating. It is made of the same anodized aluminum as its successor, which protects a vapor path construction of surgical-grade stainless steel. It also includes a stainless-steel oven which is strategically located at the bottom of the device, as far away from the mouthpiece as possible so the vapor cools naturally as it travels from the oven to the mouthpiece. The oven is constructed to be purposefully shallow and narrow to promote even heating of material throughout.

The PAX 2 features a 45-second heat-up time to 400°F. It offers four pre-set temperature settings across a range of 360°F to 420°F. Its lithium-ion battery charges from dead in about 2 hours and can support up to 8 sessions on a single charge. The PAX 2 includes the same lip sensing technology as the PAX 3, allowing the device to quickly cool down and preserve material when not in use without ending your session.

The PAX 2 currently retails at $149.99 and the starter kit includes both the elevated and flat mouthpieces, a maintenance kit, and a USB charger with a magnetic dock. Available accessories include a multi-tool, half-pack oven lid, mini charger, and colorful flat mouthpieces. The device also comes with a 2-year limited warranty. 5. PAX Era

The PAX Era is the pod-based portable vaporizer from the PAX family, which makes vaporizing concentrates a quick, clean, and easy process. Pre-filled PAX Era-compatible pods can easily be switched in and out of the device with a simple click. Each pod features a dual-wick system fully submerged in the concentrate to not waste any cannabis material. The device itself is small at just 3.3″ tall and 0.72″ wide, making it extremely mobile and discreet. The PAX Era is encased in a durable, slate-colored, bead-blasted anodized aluminum, which gives it a sleek and futuristic appearance. There are not buttons on the device; instead it responds to shakes and taps, activating the heating element when you inhale on the mouthpiece.

The PAX Era offers a temperature range of 520°F to 790°F, making it ideal for vaporizing concentrates. These temperatures can be accessed across four pre-set temperature settings. The Era heats up instantly when inhalation is detected from the mouthpiece. With the PAX Mobile smartphone application, you can set temperature to the precise degree and closely monitor your usage with the Era’s Session Control function. The Era’s battery takes approximately 45 minutes to charge from dead and lasts for about 200 puffs or more.

Currently, the PAX Era retails for $29.99. Pods are sold separately and the device comes with a 1-year limited warranty. Read our PAX Era review piece for more information.

6. Firefly 2

The Firefly 2 is slightly larger than most other portable vaporizers on the market, standing at 5.1″ tall and 1.4″ wide. It supports the use of both dry herb material and concentrates with an oven capacity of 0.2 grams. To use concentrate materials with the Firefly 2, simply insert a concentrate pad into the oven. It employs convection heating, vaporizing material with the flow of hot air over the material in the chamber. The body of the Firefly 2 is made of a magnesium alloy material, which surrounds a vapor path of borosilicate glass.

The Firefly 2 includes a temperature range of 200°F to 500°F, which can be selected in 10°F increments. It also offers connectivity to a companion mobile application. The Firefly 2’s lithium ion battery charges rapidly in about 45 minutes with the device’s Quickcharge adapter. The battery can be used continuously for about 90 minutes before requiring a recharge.

Last but not least, the Mighty is a hefty portable vaporizer that packs a punch. Standing at 5.5″ tall and 3.25″ wide, it is one of the largest portable vaporizers in our review. The device can support both dry herb and concentrate materials and uses both conduction and convection heating to vaporize your chosen material. Despite the size of the vaporizer, the oven holds 0.2 grams. The larger size of the Mighty allows for an LED screen to display current battery life and selected temperature.

The Mighty offers a temperature range of 104°F to 410°F and heats in 1 to 2 minutes. While the device does not link up to a companion mobile application, the temperature is adjustable in one-degree increments with the use of temperature up and down buttons on the body of the vaporizer.
