If you’re looking for a great portable vaporizer that can be used with your dry herb material, you might find yourself comparing the PAX 3 and Grasshopper vaporizers. Each offers its own spin on the portable dry herb vaporizer, with different designs and unique methods for changing settings and controlling your device. Whatever your preference, reviewing these two devices is an excellent place to begin your portable vaporizer journey.

Design and Aesthetics Comparison

The PAX 3 is a sleek device that packs advanced functionality into a high-tech design. At just 4″ tall and 1.25″ wide, the PAX 3 is highly portable vaporizer that can be easily concealed and carried along with you wherever you go. It boasts an extra-durable anodized aluminum exterior, which not only looks great but serves to distribute heat from the oven, ensuring the device never grows hot to the touch.

The PAX 3’s oven is strategically positioned opposite the mouthpiece, allowing ample time for the vapor to cool as it travels through the surgical-grade stainless steel vapor path. This makes for smooth, comfortable draws. On the face of the device is an LED indicator in the shape of PAX’s logo, four petals which light up to display information about battery life, temperature settings, and session usage. The PAX 3’s oven can hold up to 0.35 grams of material; a half-pack oven lid for shorter sessions is included in the “complete kit” or available for purchase on the PAX website.

The Grasshopper looks like a garden variety pen, although slightly larger in scale. At 5.5″ in length and 0.55″ in diameter, it is longer than the PAX 3 yet still quite portable and discreet. The Grasshopper is made of 95% metal, either stainless steel or titanium depending on the model you select. The dry herb chamber is located directly beneath the mouthpiece, which unscrews for when you need to pack the device. The Grasshopper’s chamber can hold up to ¼ teaspoon of ground dry herb material.

On the far end of the mouthpiece is a plunger that turns the device on and off, which is surrounded by a dial for cycling through the device’s temperature settings. In the center of the device are a series of small, round status lights that double as air intake holes.

How Both Vaporizers Work

The PAX 3 is a conduction vaporizer, meaning it heats material directly by way of physical contact with the heating element. The vapor then travels through the vapor path and mouthpiece for quick and smooth inhalation. The PAX 3 can be used with ground dry herb, or you can utilize the included concentrate insert (complete kit only) to vaporize wax or oil. It takes approximately 22 seconds for PAX 3 to heat up.

The PAX 3 offers precise control over temperature, allowing you to select your setting down to the degree. The only button on the device is located underneath the mouthpiece, and a series of presses turns the device on and off, controls temperature setting, and more. The PAX 3 can also be connected to your smartphone via Bluetooth® connection for use with the PAX Mobile application, which offers added insights and a greater degree of control over your device.

The Grasshopper employs a simple design, featuring a plunger for turning the device on and off, a temperature setting dial, and a series of indicator lights for communicating information to you. The chamber is located directly below the mouthpiece, which can be unscrewed to allow you to pack your ground dry herb material into the device. Once you replace the mouthpiece, turn the dial to your desired temperature setting and allow the device to heat-up. The Grasshopper uses convection heating to vaporize your material; that means hot air passes over the material as you inhale through the mouthpiece.

Ease of Use

If ease of use is your priority, look no further than the PAX 3. Between its streamlined design and connectivity to a smartphone mobile application, the PAX 3 makes vaporizing both dry herb and concentrate material straightforward. Simply load your chosen material into the oven located at the bottom of the device, select your desired temperature and allow your device to. The PAX 3 will gently vibrate when it is heated and ready for use, indicating that you can then press the mouthpiece to your lips and inhale.

Cleaning your vaporizer after every few uses is equally easy. All you need to do is remove the oven lid, screen, and mouthpiece and use cotton swabs and isopropyl alcohol to gently swab the oven lid and screen. Then, run the included pipe cleaners or wire brush through the vapor path to clean it out. If you’ve used a concentrate insert during your session, submerge it in isopropyl alcohol to remove any residue. Allow all the components to dry fully before you reassemble your device for your next session.

The Grasshopper is relatively easy to use as well. First, unscrew the mouthpiece to expose the chamber and pack in your ground dry herb material. Replace the mouthpiece and power on the device, using the nearby dial to select your desired temperature setting. Once heated, inhale through the mouthpiece to pull air over the material, vaporizing it on the way.

When you are finished with your session, clean the Grasshopper by removing the mouthpiece and placing it in isopropyl alcohol. Use a moist cotton swab to clean out the chamber in a circular motion. Once the mouthpiece is finished soaking, use the cotton swab to remove any excess material or residue that remains stuck to it. Allow all pieces to fully dry before reassembling your device.

Battery Capacity and Life

The PAX 3’s built-in rechargeable lithium-ion battery charges relatively quickly and lasts for multiple sessions. In about 90 minutes, the battery will be fully charged using the provided USB charger and magnetic charging dock. The battery life supports approximately 8 sessions, or approximately 90 minutes of continuous use.

The Grasshopper’s lithium-ion battery is rechargeable and easily replaced if needed. Additional batteries can be ordered directly from Hopper Labs, the Grasshopper’s manufacturer. Each battery takes approximately 90 minutes to fully charge and can last for three to four full chamber packs, depending on the temperature and intensity of use. To charge your batteries, plug your device into the USB charger provided.

Temperature Settings

The PAX 3 offers a high level of temperature control, allowing you to choose your precise temperature across the 360°F – 420°F range. Using either the PAX Mobile smartphone application or the control button, you can cycle through temperature settings or one of the five dynamic modes to support your unique preferences and tailor your session to your liking. The PAX 3 heats rapidly in an average of 22 seconds, which varies slightly depending on your current temperature setting. Using lip-sensing technology, the PAX 3 warms slightly when raised to your lips and cools slightly when lowered. This feature helps conserve material and improve vapor quality, making for a top-notch session every time.

The Grasshopper features a heating time of 5 seconds across its four temperature settings. The temperature select dial adjusts the temperature in 20°C increments across a range of 130°C to 210°C (266°F – 410°F). This creates four distinct temperature settings for you to choose from.

Smartphone Apps

The PAX 3 expands its already-broad functionality with the PAX Mobile smartphone application, available for both iOS and Android mobile devices. Connect your device to your smartphone using Bluetooth® connectivity for your PAX Mobile application to recognize it. Once connected, you can name your device, control temperature and monitor usage directly on your smartphone. You can also access the PAX 3’s dynamic modes, which allow you to optimize your vape experience. Choose between standard, boost, efficiency, flavor, and stealth modes, depending on your preferences and the circumstances surrounding your session. Dynamic modes can also be accessed directly on your device via the button hidden underneath the mouthpiece.

Price and Warranty

The PAX 3 currently costs $199.99 for the device alone or $249.99 for the complete kit, which comes with cleaning and maintenance tools, extra screens, the half-pack oven lid, and concentrate inserts. It also includes a 10-year limited warranty.

The Grasshopper comes in four different models, ranging from $225 for its most inexpensive model to $350 for their most advanced model. Each device comes backed by a lifetime limited warranty from Hopper Labs.
